Lindsey Vonn & Carlo Janka win World Cup titles

Friday, March 12th, 2010

United States star Lindsey Vonn and Swiss Carlo Janka claimed the overall World Cup titles after dominant performances in Garmisch.

Olympic downhill gold medallist Vonn, eased to super-G victory to take her third straight overall World Cup title.

Meanwhile, Janka, who won giant slalom gold in Vancouver, won the same event in Germany to take an unassailable lead in the men’s standings.

The men’s and women’s slalom titles will both be decided on Sunday.

As the last skier to race, Vonn was already assured of the crown after German rival Maria Riesch, who needed a top-two finish to challenge, was pushed into third place.

“I was so nervous because the title was on the line,” said Vonn, who also won the super-G and downhill categories.

Vonn led from the front and brought down her Super-G season in style after her downhill gold and Super-G bronze medal from last month’s Vancouver Winter Games.

AnnTaylor Surprises Analysts With Swing To Slim 4Q Profit

Friday, March 12th, 2010

AnnTaylor Stores Corp. (ANN) eked out a surprise profit in its fiscal fourth quarter on stable sales and a leap in margins after drastic discounting a year earlier.

Shares were off 1.8% to $19.10 premarket, after a 2.2% gain Thursday. The stock has soared from about $3.00 a year ago.

The company, which operates Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft brands, has faced particular struggles in the slow economy’s consumer-spending downturn because of its focus on professional attire. Like others, it has cut costs, inventory and store count, but AnnTaylor has also funneled ad dollars to high-fashion magazines and revamped window displays to de-emphasize career clothing.

For the quarter ended Jan. 30, the company posted a profit $41,000, or less than one cent a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $375.6 million, or $6.66 a share. The latest quarter had 5 cents in charges, while the prior-year loss excluding write-downs and other impacts was $1.03. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 1-cent loss for the most-recent quarter.

Revenue shrank 2.9% to $469.1 million, with a slight 0.6% slide in same-store sales. Last month, the company raised its target to about $470 million and said same-store sales would be essentially flat.

Pakistan blasts kill 45

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Twin suicide attacks have targeted the Pakistani military, killing 45 people in the second attack to hit security forces in the country’s cultural capital Lahore this week.

Police said the bombers walked up to Pakistani army vehicles in the densely populated R A Bazaar area, blowing themselves up as people sat down to eat before the main Muslim weekly prayers were to begin.

The army cordoned off the tree-lined street where there were shops and a mosque, preventing access to journalists as ambulances raced through the city of 8 million to ferry the dead and wounded to hospitals.

The blasts underscored rising volatility in Lahore, where security forces have been a common target in attacks blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants opposed to Pakistan’s alliance with the United States.

‘American Idol’: We’re gonna need [sob] a bigger box [snivel] of kleenex on the scene of [blubber] the heartbreaking Top 16 eliminations

Friday, March 12th, 2010

You know things are bad indeed when Simon Cowell buries his head in his hands. The moment Ryan asked Andrew Garcia and Alex Lambert to step up into the American Idol semi-finals center ring of doom, Simon’s face just disappeared into his palms, and he stayed that way until Ryan asked him if Andrew had peaked too soon. It was maybe the most outwardly emotional I’ve ever seen Simon since I’ve covered this show, on what was definitely the most emotional Idol I’ve ever witnessed first hand. I think that photo of a crestfallen Crystal Bowersox says it all, really — in fact, I kinda worry that last night’s events may have broken something in the Idol frontrunner that will not be easily mended. Sniff. Even my snark demon Smirkelstiltskin was a touch misty.
It was a disconcerting night right from the beginning, actually, when with 19 minutes to go before air time, a mysterious voice came over the speakers, saying with the same conviction with which one might order a deli sandwich, “If you’re here to have some fun, make some noise, people.” Four minutes later, the voice returned, connected to a warm up guy who was decidedly not Cory. Instead of getting everyone up on their feet and picking audience members out to shake that booty, this new dude (who Debbie the Stage Manager eventually informed me was named Jay, and would be filling in for Cory again next week) told the crowd in downy tones to be mindful of hiding their purses, jackets, and flyaway hairs from the camera. He asked the audience, “Are you guys excited?!” like he was the host of Blues Clues talking to a crowd of sleepy preschoolers, and he pulled up a woman from the audience named Brandy from Costa Mesa to sing, of all things, Beyoncé’s “Flaws and All.” (Sample lyric: “I’m a train wreck in the morning/ I’m a bitch in the afternoon.” Sunny!) It is a uniquely strange day when one begins to appreciate the particular talents of Cory the Warm Up Comic.
